Unmasking 7 myths about Magento eCommerce platforms

Unmasking 7 myths about Magento eCommerce platforms

Category : Guest Post

Magento has been a popular name in the eCommerce platforms market for a while now. It’s obvious that with such popularity there would be many conceptions and beliefs in the people. Words spread in the market and gradually become a conception which is either a truth or a “Strong Myth”.

Same is the case with Magento. Despite being one of the most acceptable and successful eCommerce platforms today, Magento is well surrounded with many Myths and conceptions. Such misconceptions have spread a lot of negative words about Magento.

Although these misconceptions automatically fade away when one is actually exposed to this wonderful and top-rated platform, it would be great if people are exposed to a more clear picture of it.

The main aim of writing this article is to debunk the most common misconceptions and myths about Magento. I am talking about the myths which compel rookie business aspirants to un-check Magento from their list of considerations while choosing an eCommerce platform for their online store. Probably this small contribution would help the aspirants to choose a better platform.

Myths that I can’t take anymore about Magento

Magento only suits to the large scale businesses

It’s probably the strongest myth that is keeping Magento away from the choice-list of many small and medium-sized businesses. Perhaps, it’s because the biggest brands like Nike, Samsung, and Adidas use Magento platform to carry out their massive transactions.

While these big names already enforce the myth, I can assure that Magento won’t eat a small or medium scale business. It’s highly scalable and flexible to seamlessly keep up even with the smallest business startups. It’s up to you that how well you know your business and it’s requirements to scale the platform accordingly.

The truth is Magento can be scaled to meet the largest business requirements, and it doesn’t mean it can’t handle your small business requirements. Trust me, With Magento, you don’t need to think about the scale at all.

Magento websites are slow

After making it not fit for small businesses, the next myth that almost had topped our list here is “Magento is slow”. It’s probably a myth that can be hardly debunked even after exposing the users this platform. Reason is, like every other eCommerce or CMS platform, Magento depends on various factors for loading speed. It’s not just the coding that makes a website slow but the factors like this can be more dangerous:

  • Slow web hosting server
  • Unoptimized back-office configurations
  • Unoptimized images
  • Not using Magento extension from reliable sources etc.

So, you can not only slow down a Magento store with the above mistakes, but any million dollar website won’t survive these in terms of loading speed.

Next time when someone tells you that “Magento is slow”, just ask him the following questions:

  • What’s your website host?
  • Are you using shared server or dedicated server?
  • Have you optimized the Magento Back-Office configurations?
  • Do you compress your images before uploading?
  • Do you get your Magento extensions developed from a Magento certified developer?

Answers to these questions would clear your confusion about Magento being slow. For the time being, you should know that Nike, Samsung, and Adidas would not hurt their business with something that is slow.

There is no customer support

Magento provides the eCommerce platform to users across the globe for free with its open-source community edition. Certainly, there are millions of business aspirants like you, who wish to use Magento as the first ladder step in their start-up. It’s not possible for Magento to provide a free customer support to such a huge number of users.

For that, Magento offers its premium enterprise edition, where you need to pay for using the platform and in return, you will have the dedicated 24×7 customer support from the Magento team. So, it’s not that Magento doesn’t have customer support. It’s just that it’s for those enterprise users only.

But it doesn’t mean Magento does not support its community users. You have various options to get support even for your free edition of Magento.

– The Magento community and forums are always the best places to find the answers to your issues and questions regarding the platform.

– There are Magento Certified developers who can support you in lieu of Payment for their support to you.

– There are awesome Magento blogs and bloggers who always have a pool of useful contents to help you out.

– Magento releases regular security and version updates to keep your website safe from loopholes and breaches.

So, Magento is well supported in both the free and paid versions.

Magento is easily customizable like other platforms

I would say that is true for some other platforms who use easier frameworks for the development. However, I can’t say the same for Magento. In my years of experience with Magento, the initial days were quite though. Especially when you are dealing with the Zend framework which is complex it in its own ways.

However, after gaining the experience with the Zend framework, I have have been working pretty fluently with it now. With so much of efficiency, flexibility, and scalability, complexity is an inevitable factor.

That’s a case when you are talking about Magento development. If you are using it as your eCommerce platform, you must have a knowledge of PHP and Zend frame. Alternatively, you can also hire a Magento certified developer if you don’t want to deal with the technical stuff.

  • You can hire any PHP developer

I have used the phrase “Magento certified developer” multiple times in the post. Most of the users think that anyone with an experience with eCommerce website development can easily work on their Magento development as well.

This myth is highly inevitable when we are looking for cheaper solutions to get our big jobs done. Probably, no PHP developer would say he can’t work on a PHP based platform. However, developing with Magento is not something that every PHP developer can do.

In one of the previous points, I have mentioned the “Zend” framework as well. Well, if you are not aware of the blending of Magento and Zend framework, it’s not possible to work on a Magento development project. Different eCommerce platforms use different frameworks and to work on those platforms, you need to be fluent with their frameworks as well.

The Developers who are certified for Magento had to go through a tough exam to validate their skills and ability to implement those. A certified Magento developer is always recommended in most cases. However, there are some myths associated with this as well, read in the next point.

  • A Magento certified developer is all you need

It’s always a recommended advice to hire a certified Magento developer for your website. However, some of the business owners take it as a conception and start believing that only a certified developer can do the Magento development.

One must understand that certification is not a pill that would inculcate all the required skills. Sometimes, even a non-certified developer can do what a certified one can’t.

I am talking about the expertise and skills that grow with the experience. If you are looking to hire a Magento developer, don’t go blindly on the certificate on the resume. You must consider expertise and experience above the certification.

  • One developer can do everything

Many online business aspirants choose a cost-saving solution by in-housing a single Magento developer and asking him to do all that is required. Or, another short-cut they would take is hiring a freelance developer to get the whole site developed.

I am not against the one man army or freelance concept. In fact, Freelance developers can be more economic in most of the small development tasks. However, getting whole Magento site developed by a single developer is not a good choice. Why? Let me explain.

Have you ever wondered why there are so many different certifications for Magento?

It is because Magento is a combination of several aspects of eCommerce. These aspects could be seen as business logic, PHP programming, Zend framework, website design and implementation, dropshipping, content marketing, usability, conversion and much more.

Now, all these aspects cannot be definitely fulfilled by a single developer by your side. If there is any such claim, be extra cautious and ask as many questions before hiring. No one alone can be an expert in all these aspects, so maybe they are bluffing or unaware of the real world implementation of those aspects.

Final Word

No eCommerce platform is perfect today. At least when eCommerce standards and requirements are changing every day, it is really hard to get a perfect one. Magento does have some drawbacks as well. It’s better to know the drawbacks instead of staying in the darkness of myths and conceptions. I have tried to debunk some of the most common myths here. Indeed there would be more as well. Do you have any such conception or know about any such myth? Do let us know in the comments.
